On December 21, 2004, the Salt Lake Tribune reported that the Division of Wildlife Resources had caught two radio-collared Canada lynxes that had immigrated to Utah from a reintroduced population in Colorado and sent them back (Wandering lynx caught, sent home).  The official reason given for this action was that it was bobcat season and care must be taken in order to avoid having bobcat trappers  mistake the lynxes for bobcats and killing them.  No doubt this was part of the reason, but we should remember that DWR routinely gives preference to "consumptive" wildlife values over "nonconsumptive" ones.  Thus, the larger picture is that DWR wants to avoid the possibility of a law suit for the taking, accidental or otherwise, of this threatened species, while continuing to allow maximum bobcat trapping.  But wouldn't it make more sense for DWR to manage bobcat trapping in such a way as to avoid the taking of lynx, and t let these mysterious creatures reintroduce themselves to Utah?
